New Teen Workshop Featured on ABC FAMILY TV
New Session to Be Announced This experience will help you: to become self confident to make positive choices to be able to think on your feet to find the organic humor without "going for the joke"
You will meet other teens and have so much fun **guaranteed**.
This two hour workshop will incorporate improvisation and sketch comedy. The teens ages 13 - 17 play theater games and work on sketches which will be performed by our Teen Comedy Troupe "The Fine Young Comedians". "The Fine Young Comedians" participate in the weekly workshops with the other teens to help facilitate the games. The hope is to generate new material and to hone everyone's improv skills. As the new members become more comfortable with the group the hope is to have them move up into the performing group and become one of the "Fine Young Comedians". Several of the "Fine Young Comedians" attend LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts and this helps the workshops to be creative and funny. These students are very generous and create a safe and supporting atmosphere for the new students. Improvisation for the Theater was created by Viola Spolin after many years developing "theater games" for children and later for her son Paul Sills when he started Second City Theater in Chicago. The process is to learn by doing and to have fun while learning. The workshop group learn to tell stories by focusing on the "Who", "What" and "Where" and the games help teach each of these three important specifics of an "improv". The stories can become funny because no one knows what's going to happen next (organic comedy). Some "set" comedy sketches come from improvised scenes. "The Fine Young Comedians" have performed at Stand-Up New York. Hal Peller, workshop facilitator and group director, worked with children through the Broadway Theater Institute. Hal, former board member, teaching artist and faculty staff member at the Broadway Theater Institute, worked in several schools. He also taught improvisation at the Jefferson Market Library for high school students.
